WHAT IS A PLATELET RICH PLASMA?

Platelet Rich Plasma is produced from a patient’s own blood. PRP is a is an effective treatment that uses your own plasma to reverse the aging process by stimulating collagen production and tissue regeneration.

HOW DOES PLATELET RICH PLASMA WORK?

Platelet Rich Plasma stimulates the patient’s own cells to boost collagen production resulting in smoother, firmer skin. The platelets gradually release various growth factors that stimulate the body’s natural process of tissue regeneration and collagen production. WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING MY PLATELET RICH PLASMA TREATMENT?

A small amount of the patient’s blood is collected to isolate natural platelet-rich plasma for injection into the skin. PRP is applied directly onto the skin and then the serum is microneedled into the skin which stimulates the natural healing process and the creation of collagen. Patients usually require a series of approximately 1-4 treatments approximately 4 weeks apart.  

HOW LONG WILL MY PLATELET RICH PLASMA TREATMENT LAST?

You can expect to see the results of PRP gradually. Patients will start seeing a refreshed and rejuvenated complexion about 3 to 4 weeks after their first PRP session. Follow up appointments should be booked 3 months after the initial treatment series to ensure that enough collagen has been generated.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF PLATELET RICH PLASMA TREATMENT?

Patients can resume most activities immediately. Most common side effects are redness, slight swelling and minor bruising following the procedure. Patients skin will look pink for up to 5 days. Your health care practitioner will review all the rare potential side effects at your complimentary initial consultation.

PRE-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS FOR PLATELET RICH PLASMA TREATMENT

  • Do not consume alcoholic beverages at least 24 hours prior to treatment (alcohol may thin the blood and increase the risk of bruising)

  • Avoid anti-inflammatory/blood thinning medications before treatment. Medications and supplements such as aspirin, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, St. John’s Wort, Omega 3/Fish Oil supplements, Ibuprofen and other NSAIDS have a blood thinning effect and can increase the risk of bruising and swelling after injections.

  • Refrain from, or minimize, smoking three days prior to treatment.

POST-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS FOR PLATELET RICH PLASMA TREATMENT

  • Allow the serum to remain on your skin for at least 4 hours following the treatment.

  • Rinse your face with lukewarm water and avoid using any cleansers that can cause harm.

  • Some patients may experience discomfort which should settle within 24 hours. If you continue to feel pain, patients can take Acetaminophen for relief.

  • For the first 24 hours or so, you can expect to see redness, bruising, and swelling. The skin may also seem raw. By the second day, the redness may settle a little and start to appear like a sunburn.

  • Do not use any makeup or exfoliating agents on your skin for at least 72 hours following your treatment.

  • Avoid extensive sun, tanning beds, steam or sauna rooms or any other activity that involves heating the skin for 72 hours following your treatment.

  • Apply a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB, SPF 25 or greater sunscreen to your daily skincare routine to prevent post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

  • Avoid any kind of facials, laser treatments or skincare products that can cause damage or peeling for two weeks following your procedure.

  • Most patients will continue to see improvement in their skin for 6 months or more, however the effects of the treatment can last for 10 to 12 months. Patients will notice a rejuvenated glow even as the pigmentation, dark circles, and scars and marks start to fade.
